SPYMASTER
Mission 13
THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAILS
Listening comprehension is rather a complex thing where the overall meaning and separate words are closely entwined.

In the context, we normally know what to expect and tell ourselves how to interpret what we heard thus disregarding the details. In practice, it’s called 'practically understood'.
And if it’s 'practically understood' , why bother about the details, right? Not really.

Without attention to detail, dreams about a proper level will remain dreams. Therefore, the sooner we start taking details seriously, the faster things will advance.
1.
As a warm-up
Try to understand what this piece is about.
Most of the words are clear:

  • _________ there’s my bus into town, ____________ off.

However, without the missing bit, what we heard does not make much sense.

Let’s give it another try:

  • ____[lʊ]_____ there’s my bus into town, _____[besbɪ]_______ off.

Sounds a bit like loo and someone called Besby, but, seriously, loo?!

Let’s listen a few more times. There’s clearly a diphthong at the beginning, which sounds a lot like oh. Yep, it’s got to be Oh then. What about the loo? There’s this trace of an extra sound after it. Exactly.

  • Oh, look, there’s my bus into town.

Now, what do we do about Besby? As we know, English speakers hate consonant clusters and leave out sounds whenever they can. What could he be saying in that situation? Eureka!

  • Oh, look, there’s my bus into town, I’d best be off.

2.
Read between the lines (even if there’s only one line)
Let's proceed with the warm-up. Try to determine the context of the phrase uttered.

1.

'About you' will be identified even by a complete beginner and even kids will be able to hear 'comfort' – with several repetitions, perhaps:

  • _________ about you, _________ comfort _______.

Got it now!

  • I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that.

That comes from The Big Lebowski, by the way.

2.

This one, too, is as clear as can be.

  • Could you just give us a moment, please?

The meaning is obvious and the phrase itself could be uttered in any kind of context, from a restaurant to friends wishing to talk in private.

Over to you now. Let's see how you manage to determine the context with no prompts at all.
EXERCISES
It's all simple: a short recording followed by a question. If you get it right, you'll be awarded a badge by the Chief of the General Staff. If you get it wrong, we'll explain what's what.

Which is the most likely context?
Choose the option that fits best according to what you hear.

1/20
Not really.
You don’t apply to a hotel.
Exactly!
Applying is the first step you take.
Nope.
You get a job after you apply for it.
2/20
Very much so.
Seeing a doctor is a good idea.
No.
'Seen' definitely was there but with a different meaning.
Hmm...
Where did that even come from?
3/20
Yes,
old school photography involves developing the film.
No.
You can develop recipes but that’s a weird way to ask about it.
No.
Yoga develops your stamina and flexibility but it’s not how you ask about it.
4/20
No.
Please listen again.
No.
'Run under the tap' was definitely there but the meaning is different.
Exactly.
And he’s going to run it under the tap.
5/20
No,
not leave and not immediately.
No,
mind the tense.
Right!
For the first time.
6/20
Positive.
It’s down there somewhere.
Not really,
although 'down there somewhere' sounds a bit like it.
No.
he’d have been more specific.
7/20
No.
It only sounds like 'away'.
Correct!
That’s as good a way as any.
No.
Not even close.
8/20
No.
Not quite so.
Totally!
The hairdresser asks about the haircut.
No.
Done to what? Your money?
9/20
Yes,
most likely.
No,
unless you want even smaller shots.
No,
tickets don’t necessarily come in different sizes.
10/20
No.
Arriving where?
Exactly!
When would you be arriving?
No.
Highly unlikely.
11/20
No.
What's extraordinary about mumbling?
No.
Not necessarily weak.
Exactly!
What the hell is he doing here, fiddling with his pens?
12/20
No.
An actor has to be smooth in front of the cameras, doesn’t he?
Yep.
Most likely.
No.
TV announcers are meant to be smooth, actually.
13/20
Yes,
she did. A major faux pas.
No,
the joke was on her.
No.
No reference to that.
14/20
Yes.
As opposed to 'in the clear'.
No,
clear has a different meaning here.
No,
here clear has nothing to do with water.
15/20
Right.
And putting the furniture together.
Maybe,
but it’s just guessing.
No.
He’s not a hunter as such. Well, maybe a covert one.
16/20
No.
Quite the opposite.
Exactly!
At least, for the time being.
No.
Nothing that drastic.
17/20
No.
Quite the reverse.
Possibly,
but that's not the point.
Exactly!
And tightened them.
18/20
Yep,
what has it got to do with it?
No.
That has got nothing to do with that.
No,
We wish we knew.
19/20
No.
Just wait till the feminists get here.
No,
What kind of a generalisation is that?
Yes,
more than their fair share of work.
20/20
No,
How are we supposed to know that?
Exactly!
Only got in last night.
No.
Come on, they are already back.
