На днях мы разобрались, что модальные глаголы (MAY, MUST, WILL, MIGHT) и др. могут выражать:

• способность; долженствование; возможность; вероятность; желание; позволение; запрет.

The other day we learned that modals
(MAY, MUST, WILL, MIGHT etc.) can express:

• ability, obligation; possibility; probability; willingness; permission; prohibition.

Сегодня нас интересует вероятность

• He MUST be drunk. — Должно быть, он пьян.
• She MAY / MIGHT / COULD be his sister. — Возможно, она его сестра.
• You CAN’T be a policeman. —Не может быть, что ты полицейский.

Как видите, степень уверенности в чём-то можно выразить всего одним модальным глаголом.

Today, we are focusing on probability

• He MUST be drunk. = I’m pretty sure he’s drunk.
• She MAY / MIGHT / COULD be his sister. = It’s possible that she is his sister.
• You CAN’T be a policeman. = I’m pretty sure, you are not a policeman.

As you can see, the degree of certainty can be expressed with a mere modal verb.

HAVE + V₃

Степень уверенности можно выражать не только в настоящем времени, но и в прошедшем.

Для этого (прямо как в 3-м кондишнле) добавим элемент совершённости — старый добрый перфект.

HAVE + V₃:

• I must have passed the exam.
• Somebody may/might/could have stolen your wallet while you were sleeping.
• They can’t/couldn't have seen us. It was too dark.
• It must have been love (but it’s over now).

HAVE + V₃

The degree of certainty can be expressed not only with regard to the present, but also to the past.

For that (just like in Type 3 Conditionals) we'll add the element of completion – the good old perfect.

HAVE + V₃:

• I must have passed the exam.
• Somebody may/might/could have stolen your wallet while you were sleeping.
• They can't/couldn't have seen us. It was too dark.
• It must have been love (but it's over now).

Заметьте, что значение Past Simple выражается перфектным инфинитивом, а Past Continuous переходит в перфектно-длительный инфинитив.

Note that the meaning of the Past Simple is expressed with a perfect infinitive, and the Past Continuous changes for a perfect continuous infinitive.

Все примеры, приведенные в разделе 1, организованы по градации от наибольшей уверенности к наименьшей.

Ваша задача:

1. Составить две таблицы с этими модальными глаголами: для настоящего времени и для прошедшего.
2. В обеих таблицах должно быть по 3 строчки; в каждой — по модальному глаголу, который выражает уверенность (MUST; MAY/MIGHT; CAN’T и т. д.)
3. Напротив каждого глагола следует указать ПРОЦЕНТ уверенности, который он выражает. (например, MUST — 66%; MAY — 10% и т. д.)

Сделайте так, чтобы эти проценты были шкалой.

Итого: 2 таблички; в каждой по 3 ячейки; сбоку от ячеек — процентная шкала уверенности.

CONFIDENTIAL ASSIGNMENT

All the examples given in section 1 are grouped from the most probable to the least probable.

Your task:

1. Draw up two tables with those modals: for the present and for the past respectively.
2. Both tables have to have 3 rows, each containing a modal verb that expresses probability (MUST; MAY/MIGHT; CAN’T, etc.)
3. Next to each verb, indicate the PERCENTAGE of probability that it expresses. (e.g., MUST — 66%; MAY — 10% etc.)

Show these percentages as a scale.
To sup up: 2 tables, 3 cells in each; next to the cells — a percentage scale of probability.
