Итак, оперативная сводка на столе. Читаем:

The General is pinning another medal on his chest.
Генерал нацепляет очередную медаль себе на грудь.

The Colonel [ˈkɜːnl] is sitting in comfort stuffing his bloody gut.

Косвенные вопросы

Вы, конечно, помните, что для образования вопросов мы ставим вспомогательный глагол на первое место:

HE IS at home. — Он дома.
IS HE at home? — Он дома?
Where IS HE? — Где он?

Но! Если вопрос находится «внутри» другого предложения, ничего никуда выносить в нем не нужно. По-умному это называется «косвенный вопрос».

Where IS HE? - Где он? (просто вопрос)
I know where HE IS. - Я знаю, где он. (вопрос стал частью сложного предложения)

Внимательнее с этим, это одна из самых частотных ошибок русскоговорящих.

NB!

В отличие от русского языка, запятую перед where ставить не нужно!

Reported questions

You are sure to remember that, in order to form a question, we put the auxiliary before the subject:

HE IS at home.
IS HE at home?
Where IS HE?

But! If the question is 'inside' another sentence, there’s no need to put anything anywhere. In linguistic terms, it’s called a 'reported question'.

Where IS HE? (regular question)
I know where HE IS. (the question is now part of a complex sentence)

Careful with that, it’s a common mistake for non-English speakers to make.

Complex Object (сложное дополнение)

Невероятно удобный инструмент.
По-русски мы говорим, что видели или слышали, КАК или ЧТО что-то происходило.

В английском это выражается гораздо легче:

Не обязательно использовать окончание ING. Обратите внимание на логику форм:


· He PINNED another medal on his chest. →
· I saw him PIN another medal on his chest.

Я видел, как он НАЦЕПИЛ очередную медаль себе на грудь. (сам факт действия)


· He SAT in comfort and STUFFED his bloody gut. →
· I saw him SIT in comfort and STUFF his bloody gut.

Я видел, что он СИДЕЛ в комфорте и НАБИВАЛ свое поганое брюхо. (сам факт действия)


· He DRANK all the company rum. →
· I saw him DRINK all the company rum.

Я видел, что он ВЫПИЛ весь ром в роте. (сам факт действия)


· He HUNG on the old barbed wire. →
· I saw him HANG on the old barbed wire.

Я видел, что он ВИСИТ на старой колючей проволоке. (сам факт действия)

Я видел его НАЦЕПЛЯЮЩИМ очередную медаль себе на грудь.
(т.е. как он нацепляет)

· I saw him SITTING in comfort STUFFING his bloody gut.

Я видел его СИДЯЩИМ в комфорте, НАБИВАЮЩИМ свое поганое брюхо.
(т.е. как он сидит и набивает)

The Complex Object

A really handy tool.

In Russian, we literally say we saw HOW something was happening or WHAT happened. In English, the same meaning is expressed in a much simpler way:

You don’t always have to use the - ING ending.
Note the logic of the forms:

• He PINNED another medal on his chest. →
• I saw him PIN another medal on his chest. (the fact that he did)

• He SAT in comfort and STUFFED his bloody gut. →
• I saw him SIT in comfort and STUFF his bloody gut. (the fact that he did)

• He DRANK all the company rum. →
• I saw him DRINK all the company rum. (the fact that he did)

• He HUNG on the old barbed wire. →
• I saw him HANG on the old barbed wire. (the fact that he did)

Подсказка

Как вы поняли, нужно вспомнить/подумать о знакомом человеке, которого вы видели за каким-либо занятием (например, сосед искал жучки в розетках) и ответить на вышеприведенные вопросы.

• 4-й вопрос (как вы тоже догадались), будет требовать ответа по уже знакомой из песни схеме:

I SAW X DOING Y. или I SAW X DO Y.

Например, I saw my neighbour inspecting / inspect the wall sockets for planted bugs. Или I saw him inspecting / inspect the wall sockets for planted bugs.

• 5-й — аналогично. Например, I heard him singing/sing.

As you understand, you are supposed to think of someone you know that you saw doing something (like your neighbour looking for bugs in the wall sockets), and answer the above questions.

• The 4th question (you guessed that too) requires the structure that you know from the song:

I SAW X DOING Y. or I SAW X DO Y.

For instance, I saw my neighbour inspecting / inspect the wall sockets for planted bugs. Or I saw him inspecting / inspect the wall sockets for planted bugs.

• The 5th is the same. Like, I heard him singing / sing.
